A survey conducted by the Digital Entertainment Group showed DVD sales and rentals have soared 676.5 percent since 2000 with 60 percent of all homes with a television also owning a DVD player. By contrast, movie attendance only increased 8.1 percent from 2000 to 2004. More recently, The Motion Picture Association of America reported that in 2005 (the latest year for which statistics are available), U.S. admissions were down almost 9 percent.
